Recipes are passed down from generation to generation. It becomes a rite of passage and an honor to learn grandma\u2019s \u201csecret\u201d ingredient to her favorite recipe. Then, years later, that recipe changed and passed down to the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>In my family, my grandmother\u2019s \u201cpasta carbonara\u201d was a family favorite but there was no recipe. She taught my mother how to make it, and then my mom taught me. And that\u2019s the case for many other families, too. Often, special family recipes aren\u2019t captured anywhere except on scraps of paper or in family memories. Until now.<\/p>\n<p>Recently,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/find-your-local-foodbank\/find-food-bank\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">FIND Food Bank<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>in California captured those family recipes in a community cookbook focusing on food from the Latino communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project is family-oriented,\u201d said Lorena Marroquin, the food bank\u2019s director of community impact. \u201cPeople talk about how they leave a legacy, how they leave something behind for the community. So if you can cook something your grandmother made, it becomes that much more special. They shared it, and it\u2019s part of the legacy that lives on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The food bank partnered with local Latino organizations. \u00a0They asked community members what recipes they liked cooking for their families, and what recipes they were taught from families.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-drupal-entity align-left\">\n<figcaption>An excerpt of the &#8220;Ancestral Recipes&#8221; cookbook, featuring atapakua<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The book is aptly titled \u201cAncestral Recipes: From My Grandmother\u2019s Kitchen to Yours.\u201d Published in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fc5d4da5-03f2-41b2-9160-bd6f62dc1283.filesusr.com\/ugd\/43a24d_35eaaffa7ec546efb19d0a4e4376d560.pdf\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">English<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fc5d4da5-03f2-41b2-9160-bd6f62dc1283.filesusr.com\/ugd\/43a24d_96ce3534c49341a189ba3effcfc877ce.pdf\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Spanish<\/a>, it includes everything from well-known dishes like huevos rancheros to dishes you may be less familiar with, like atapakua, a Mexican vegetable stew.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t your typical cookbook, Lorena explains. Instead, the food bank includes suggestions in each recipe to encourage healthy eating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re incorporating fruit and veggies, using whole grain items and healthier oils, and using moderation in recipes. They\u2019re simple, small changes that can make a big difference,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The food bank hosts live cooking demonstrations on social media to highlight recipes in the book. They also pair the food they distribute to recipes whenever possible, so people receiving food have ideas for what they can cook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do we make this educational for the community, but also something that they\u2019d want to engage with?\u201d said Lorena. \u201cIn my experience, the Hispanic community wants to eat healthily but doesn\u2019t have access to nutrition education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the cookbook does more than educate. It\u2019s also a time capsule.
